SEPTEMBER 2010

DO YOU NEED SAFETY TRAINING FOR YOUR LICENSE?

TMZ Foundation is exploring how to help meet the demand for safety training CEUs.  We currently train agency groups rather than individuals but we are discussing whether we could offer a training that is open to the general public.

If you cannot get safety training through your employer and would be interested in attending a Saturday training, please email us at info@terizennerfoundation.org

AUGUST 2010

August 12- We trained our second group of SRS staff in Lawrence, KS.  Unfortunately there wasn't enough time for a visit to Free State Brewery, so we had to settle for a Yello Sub lunch instead.  Go Hawks!

JULY 2010

July 26 was our first full day of safety training for SRS staff in Salina, KS.  We enjoyed our visit to Salina, as well as the enthusiastic participants in the training.  The KSU fans treated us well in Salina, even though the course instructors were 80% Jayhawk and 20% Mizzou Tiger!

JUNE 2010

The 6th Annual Teri Zenner Memorial Walk/Run was held on June 19th, at Heritage Park in Olathe, KS.

A few hundred friends and family members enjoyed perfect weather, a scenic and challenging course, and a pancake breakfast to help us raise money for safety awareness training.  Thank you to everyone who came and congratulations to the winners--Your support helps us make people safer!

APRIL 2010

---April 16th- TMZ Foundation held a safety training event for the staff of KC Free (a local free health clinic), held at the Uptown Theatre in K.C. MO.  Thank you to everyone who participated, let's be careful out there!

SOCIAL WORKER SAFETY ACT SIGNED INTO LAW!!!

ANNOUNCING SAFETY TRAINING

FOR CFS WORKERS STATE-WIDE!

We are proud to announce that we will be conducting safety training for Child/Family Services (CFS) workers for the state of Kansas.  We will be providing 3 training events per year for these workers on an ongoing basis.  Our training will expand the safety skills available to these workers.  This is important because many of these workers conduct home visits in remote areas where help is far away and cell phone coverage is limited.

 11/12/09

The KS Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) voted to support the Social Worker Safety Act in hopes that it can be passed in the KS legislature's upcoming session.

UPDATE-- The law passed!  See above.

10/30/09 AREA-WIDE SAFETY CONFERENCE

400 Human Service Workers from WY, JO, and DG counties gathering for a full day of safety and self-defense education in Overland Park, KS on Friday October 30th, 2009.  This event was possible thanks to Congressman Dennis Moore (D) and his efforts to improve safety for those who help others.

The Teri Zenner Foundation recognized congressman Dennis Moore with an award at the 2008 Teri Mathis Zenner Fun Run/Walk for his efforts to improve safety for human service workers.  The Foundation has been involved in the planning and execution of this event and is spreading the word our new safety training initiative at the event.  Stay tuned for more info on upcoming safety training events...

9/25/2009 - Our first safety and self-defense training completed!!

This was a milestone for our organization and a major step toward becoming a primary source for safety training and information for human service workers.

30 people completed the full-day course, which included non-physical de-escalation techniques and hands-on self defense techniques.  As soon as we have the capability, we will post photos from from the event.

8/24/09- new website launched!

This is our new site, created to keep you informed of the latest in safety training and other Foundation events.  This format is temporary--we intend to have much greater functionality in the near future!  Please stay tuned and tell us what you would like to see!

Send email to info@terizennerfoundation.org with your thoughts.

Spotlight

Unfortunately there are still limited options for safety training that meets the new Kansas law requirements for licensure.  Time and location are a factor for many folks state-wide.

We have learned of an online resource for this training and wanted to share it with you:

http://www.social-work-safety.com/

Disclaimer--We have not tried this training and are not affiliated with it.  We cannot vouch for the quality or content therein.  The provider says they are registered with the KS BSRB, and you may want to confirm that on your own.

Having said all of that, we would love to hear from anyone who has tried this provider's training.

In April 2010, The Social Worker Safety Act passed the Kansas legislature and was signed in to law by Governor Parkinson!!

-Requires that 6 of the 40 CE’s for first license renewal include safety awareness training

-One-time only, no cost to the public and no ‘extra’ cost to licensee (same # of CE hours as currently required)

Thank you for all that you have done to make social workers safer in the state of Kansas.  Kansas is the first state to pass legislation of this kind.
